Stark Naked Bits- Mouthpieces, ports and tongue pressure

Ports and tongues. Contrary to popular belief not all tongue relief bits are gentle. Sometimes tongue relief means the tongue gets sucked up into the port completely and the shoulders of the port ride down on the bars. This creates a painful base for the bit to rotate forward and a hard surface for the port to be pushed into the palate. The safest port is one that uses the cushion of the tongue and the inner flaps of the lip to help support the bit and keep it floating above the bars. This also provides the horse with a chance to react before the bit is fully engaged. Sadly some of the most popular ports are also the most severe.
